Lo-Fi Indie Gem
Maybe I am a sucker for accents, but I find myself drawn in by this movie.
The style reminds me a lot of John Carney's films (ie. Once or On the Edge) in that it's a love story with attractive actors, a good soundtrack, and a lo-fi look/feel (and possibly due to the fact that Karl Geary reminds me of Cillian Murphy before he got type-cast as the action movie villain).
I don't see enough films like this and when I do it only seems to come from digging through an actor's roles from their early career/ before they broke out (read: Stephanie Szostak) and finding a little-known gem. To be honest, this is actually how I have found the vast majority of my favorite films. Happy to see this up here!
The best
Loved this movie when I saw it years ago, and I've found myself thinking of it from time to time since then. It's really a lot of fun to watch Stephanie Szostak in one of her earliest roles. So glad that this film is now available!
At long last
I saw this movie when it first came out at a tiny little theater in the East Village. It had gotten a rave review on the front page of the New York Times arts section and I was curious because the critic had compared the lead actress to a young Jeanne Moreau, which is very high praise in my book. Well, he nailed it - the actress is Stephanie Szostak and she's completely beguiling in this movie. You might recognize her as the French editor who intimidates Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada or one of the main bad guys in Iron Man 3. I've been looking for it to show up on Netflix/Amazon ever since so I'm excited to see it's now available. Romantic, smart, sort of nutty and offbeat films like this are why I love independent cinema!
